Noel Hodnett studied under Brian Bradshaw at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, graduating in 1971. He was a member of the Grahamstown Group from 1969 to 1978. The artist’s distinctive richly descriptive paintings demonstrate his virtuosity as a draughtsman and painter. Hodnett’s powerfully charged work frequently includes indigenous animals and his beloved Eastern Cape vegetation. Through his close observation of nature, enigmatic subject matter and rich palette and paint application, Hodnett creates a poetic painterly idiom of the landscape in which he immersed himself so successfully.
