Garth Erasmus was born in 1956 in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, South Africa. After completing a teaching diploma at Hewat Training College in Cape Town, he studied fine art at Rhodes University, Grahamstown. His work spans painting, drawing, and mixed media. Erasmus emerged in the 1980s as part of the Thupelo Workshop movement and gained national recognition with his inclusion in the landmark exhibition The Neglected Tradition (1988). A visual artist and musician, he is known for Resistance Art during apartheid as well as works engaging his Khoisan heritage. His art is held in major collections, including the Smithsonian Institution.
