Christine Dixie

Based in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, where she works as a senior lecturer in Rhodes University’s Fine Art Department, Christine Dixie is known as a printmaker, with particular skills in etching. Dixie also extends the boundaries of her medium by working in installation or by using a variety of matrixes and materials. Since completing her MFA at UCT in 1993, Dixie’s work has been on numerous national and international group exhibitions. Her solo exhibitions include Hide at the Millennium Gallery, Johannesburg in 2001, Corporal Prospects at the Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg in 2007, and Parturient Prospects at the Durban Art Museum in 2007. Her solo exhibition, The Binding, at Gallery AOP in Johannesburg in 2010, was an installation of prints, sculptures, and veils that examined the roles that sacrifice plays in establishing male identity. It was acquired by the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington, DC. Dixie also participated in the exhibition, Earth Matters: Land as Material and Metaphor, at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in 2013.
