Viviane Sassen

Dutch 1972- 

Viviane Sassen, born in Amsterdam in 1972, is a Dutch artist living in her hometown. She studied fashion design and photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts and Ateliers Arnhem, earning an MFA in 1997. Her unique style, influenced by early childhood memories in Kenya, blends intense colours, light and shadow, and abstract shapes. Sassen participated in the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 and has exhibited globally at institutions like MoMA and the Rijksmuseum. In 2023, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris held a retrospective featuring over 200 of her works spanning thirty years. She has won numerous awards, such as the Dutch Prix de Rome (2007), the Infinity Award (2011) from the International Center of Photography in New York City, and the David Octavius Hill Award (2015) from the Deutsche Fotografische Akademie in Stuttgart, Germany. Sassen’s work spans fine art and commercial photography and she has contributed to major campaigns for clients like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Cartier, Armani, Stella McCartney, and Hermes.
