Tuli Mekondjo

Namibian/Angolan 1982-

Born in Angola in 1982, Tuli Mekondjo is a Namibian artist whose mixed-media and embroidered paintings explore themes of ancestry, identity, and history. Raised in refugee camps during Namibia’s War of Independence, Mekondjo’s art reflects her personal experiences of displacement. She draws inspiration from historical photographs, particularly those from the colonial and apartheid periods, to reclaim and honour her Namibian heritage. Her work uses materials such as mahangu (millet), paint, resin, and silk, employing unique processes like burying canvases in the soil to connect with the land. Mekondjo’s practice blends visual art with performance to address trauma and celebrate resilience. Her works are held in international collections such as the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Johannesburg, the Pas Collection in Belgium, and the Mercedes Benz Collection in Germany. Mekondjo was a finalist in the 2022 Norval Sovereign African Art Prize, received the 2022 DAAD Artists-in-Berlin programme, and held a 2024 Villa Romana Residency in Florence, Italy.
