Steven Cohen

South African 1962- 

Steven Cohen, born in Johannesburg in 1962, is a visual and performance artist now based in Lille, France. His art spans public interventions and gallery and theatre performances, often exploring themes of identity, marginalisation, and societal norms. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Cohen's work has been showcased at prominent venues worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Munich Opera Festival, the Seattle Art Museum, Brooklyn Art Museum, and the Iziko South African National Gallery.

Cohen's performances, such as Chandelier, which began in 2001, often involve provocative costumes and settings to challenge viewers' perceptions and highlight societal issues. His residencies include the Baryshnikov Arts Center and the Center for Performance Research in New York. Cohen's work continues to push boundaries, merging visual and performing arts to interrogate human experience and identity.
