Stephen Inggs

South African 1955- 


Stephen Inggs is an Emeritus Professor at and former Director of the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Natal and a Postgraduate Diploma in Printmaking from the University of Brighton in the UK. Inggs works predominantly in lithography, photography, and printmaking – on a large scale and in black and white. His focus is on meaning-making and identity; investigating the relationship of material objects and places to history, culture, and society.

Inggs has exhibited worldwide, including recently in Botanical Legacies at Hacklebury Fine Art in London, UK. His works are held in public collections locally and abroad, such as the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, the Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg, the Library of Congress and Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, USA, and Yale University in New Haven, CT, USA
