Stefan Ampenberger

South African 1908-1983 


Stefan Ampenberger was born in 1908 in Munich, Germany. He was a peripatetic man who came to South Africa in 1926. In the 1930s, he met and was mentored by artist JH Amshewitz in Johannesburg. Ampenberger married a fellow artist, Iris, and the couple travelled South Africa together in a caravan for seventeen years. In 1964, they finally settled in Thaba ‘Nchu, a town in the Free State. His travels influenced his artistic output, and he is well known for his landscapes. His artistic style spans traditional to colourful and expressionistic to abstracted. Ampenberger was a member of the Bloemfontein Group and occasionally exhibited with them. He also frequently exhibited alongside his wife.
