Sidney Beck

South African 1936-

Sidney Beck is a self-taught artist from Bertrams, Johannesburg. Born in 1936, he loved art as a child but studied to be a teacher, a career he held for 23 years. After retirement, Beck returned to art, working predominantly as a sculptor. In 1986, he won a bid to complete a large mural for the new addition of the Parliament Building in Cape Town. His drawings and sculptures are figural, depicting the vibrancy of township life. Beck is especially known for portraying the Penny Whistler, a musician who plays a six-holed woodwind instrument akin to the recorder.
