Sharle Matthews

South African 1961-

Sharlé Matthews is a South African artist and art educator born in 1961. The artist's professional training includes a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (Hons) majoring in painting from Rhodes University in 1984 and Practical Graphics from University of North West in 1987.

Over the years Matthews has worked in different mediums, largely painting, sculpture, collage and recently paper pulp. Inspired by the passing of time, Matthews' abstracts explore the mystery of incompletion as she explores ambiguous, fragmented and textured surfaces. Paint and paper pulp is used to explore themes of impermanence, the passage of time and ruination.

Matthews has worked as the Head of Art Department and art teacher at Mmabatho High School, lectured at University of the North West, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Damelin College, a founding director of Sabela Sizwe Development NGO in Soweto from 2006-2009, a book illustrator and a practicing fine artist from 2000. She has also exhibited in at least 4 solo and 64 group exhibitions since 2000 across South Africa.
