Samuel John Barnes

British 1847-1901

Samuel John Barnes was a highly regarded Victorian-era landscape painter. Born in Birmingham in 1847, he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and later in London. He soon found his way into landscape painting, becoming renowned for his serene portrayals of the Scottish Highland, with his works displaying a masterful construction of depth and distance. His paintings soon caught the attention of Queen Victoria, who took a keen interest in his work, having bought several of his landscapes during the late 19th century. This collection is now kept by the Royal Collection Trust.
