Rosalind Solomon

American 1930-2025

Rosalind Fox Solomon was born in Highland Park, Illinois, in 1930 and became one of America’s most acclaimed photographers. Primarily working in black-and-white photography, she explored themes of human suffering, ritual, and resilience across various cultures worldwide. Solomon studied at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and began her photography career in 1968, studying privately with Lisette Model in New York. Deeply influenced by both personal and collective trauma, her portraits combine empathy with unflinching realism. Her work is part of major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona. In 2019, she received the International Centre of Photography’s Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising her profound contribution to contemporary portraiture.
