Notes

Men in the Cities (1982-1983) is one of Robert Longo's most influential series, featuring men and women in contorted poses. Inspired by a pivotal scene from the 1970 film The American Soldier, Longo was captivated by the theatricality of two gangsters being struck by a bullet, leading him to enlist friends to his New York studio to recreate the movements he saw in the film. These gestures informed Longo's charcoal drawings and lithographs, which have become celebrated artifacts of the 1980s New York art scene and are now represented in the Whitney Museum and Museum of Modern Art.1
