Paul Stein

South African 1956- 

Paul Stein is a South African sculptor who uses a direct metal approach to abstract sculpture. Born in Johannesburg in 1956, he was exposed to the local art scene early. His father was friendly with sculptor Eduardo Villa, and this potentially influenced Stein’s path. He studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Inspired by contemporary design, industrial machinery, and nature, Stein’s work primarily utilises sheets of steel, focusing on simplicity in form and movement. He has exhibited both locally and internationally, with works in collections worldwide. He currently lives and works in Cape Town.
