Nils Burwitz is a German artist who was born in Swinemünde, a Baltic port, in 1940. His parents fled with him to West Germany in 1945, and in 1958, the family moved to South Africa. Burwitz attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduation, he returned to Europe on a scholarship to further his studies in London, Freiburg, and Salzburg. In 1964, Burwitz married and eventually settled with his family in Valldemossa, a village in Mallorca, in 1976, where he still resides. In addition to paintings and works on paper, Burwitz has also created sculptures and stained glass windows, the latter especially for churches.
