Michael Fleischer

South African 1915-1991 

Romanian-born sculptor Michael Fleischer studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Turda before receiving a bursary from the German Consulate to further his education in Stuttgart. He decided to stay in Germany at the outbreak of World War II, where he continued to create and exhibit his art. In 1962, the South African Government put out a call for metal sculptors to execute a piece for the Parliamentary Building in Windhoek, Namibia. Fleischer was chosen, prompting his move to South Africa the following year. His sculptures range from abstract to figurative and are often of families, musicians, or animals.
