Sculptor Maureen Quin attended the School of Fine Arts in Durban from 1952 to 1955 and was subsequently granted a bursary to study at Goldsmith College of Art in London. Quin’s sculptures are passionate, emotional responses to social issues and the world around her. Working in a variety of materials from wood to fibreglass to bronze, she has regularly exhibited in group and solo shows since 1962. Quin was the recipient of a Silver Medal from Pretoria University for her contribution to sculpture in South Africa (1990), an Arts and Culture Award from the Eastern Cape Government (2000), and the Medal of Honour for Visual Art from the South African Academy of Science and Culture (2016). Her works are found in the collections of many of South Africa’s universities and in institutions such as the Pretoria Art Museum, Rupert Museum, and Standard Bank.
