Lisa Brice is a contemporary South African artist who was born in Cape Town in 1968. She earned a BA in Fine Arts in 1990 from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. During her studies, she worked as a printmaking assistant for Sue Williamson and later lectured in printmaking at Stellenbosch University from 1992 to 1995. Brice moved to London, UK, in the late 1990s, where she still resides. Since 1999, she has also spent considerable time in Port of Spain, Trinidad, through workshops, residencies, and collaborations, notably working with Peter Doig and Chris Ofili. Brice is known for her works that reclaim the female nude from the male gaze. Her depictions empower the female form with agency, rather than objectifying it.

Brice has held several solo exhibitions at galleries in South Africa, Europe, and the USA, as well as in museums such as KM21 (2020) in The Hague, Netherlands, and Tate Britain (2018) in London. She has participated in many group exhibitions throughout her career, recently at the Tate Modern (2023) and Whitechapel Gallery (2022) in London, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (2022) in Texas. Brice’s works are held in the collections of the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town; the Johannesburg Art Gallery; the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California; and the Tate.
