Lien Botha

South African 1961- 

Lien Botha is one of the few South African artists who have been experimenting with the photographic medium beyond its documentary frame. She studied languages at the University of Pretoria and worked as a press photographer for Beeld before earning a BA in Fine Arts from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 1988. Botha has participated in fourteen solo exhibitions and numerous group shows and has curated eight exhibitions. Her work is featured in significant collections in South Africa and private collections worldwide. She is also an acclaimed novelist, with her work Wonderboom (2015) earning prestigious awards. She released her second novel, Vin, in 2021. From 31 August to 10 October 2023, Barnard Gallery in Cape Town mounted a collaborative collaborative exhibition between Botha and artist Jaco van Schalkwyk.
