Leon de Bliquy is known for his mythological and literary themed paintings and graphic works. He says of his work, “From an early age, my world was perceived through blunted sight. The metaphysical, mythology, poetry, literature, spirit of place and the eternal adventure in the exploration of being, have been a constant source of inspiration”. He used a wide variety of materials from egg tempera to ink to create works ranging from landscapes to still life and abstract paintings. Between 1962 and 1985 he studied at numerous South African academic institutions, including Michaelis School of Fine Art and Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en die Hogere Instituten in Antwerp, Belgium. He obtained a master’s degree in fine art, and qualifications in graphic art and printmaking. His career included working as a commercial artist and lecturing at a number of South African academic institutions. He completed two public commissions, and participated in many group shows and over thirty solo exhibitions in South Africa and internationally. De Bliquy is represented in many South African public art collections.
