Kristin Hua Yang

Chinese/South African 1970- 

Kristin Hua Yang was born in Shandong province, China, in 1970. She was an art teacher throughout the 1990s, before moving to South Africa in 1999 to learn English. Yang received her MA in Fine Art from the University of KwaZulu Natal in Pietermaritzburg before pursuing a PhD in Visual Arts from the same institution. Her father and grandfather were both artists, which inspired her love of art and helped foster her artistic talent. Yang’s artwork explores her experiences as a Chinese transplant in South Africa, encompassing themes of identity, displacement, and foreignness. She has participated in several solo shows in South Africa, China, and Italy and has further exhibited in Australia, France, Germany, Sweden, and the UK, amongst other places.
