Julia Cavalieri

Julia Cavalieri transitioned from the corporate world to become an artist after living in Paris. Largely self-taught, she has experimented with various mediums, moving towards abstract works on large canvases, often using oils and mixed media. Her recent exploration of sculpture has added depth to her practice, which includes paintings, sculptures, and installations displayed in her studio and gallery in Houghton, Johannesburg.


Cavalieri’s work explores themes of freedom, restraint, and balance. Her painting Floating Carousels portrays life’s cycles, where fleeting moments of beauty stand against a backdrop of tedium.
Complementing this is her sculpture Balance, which uses the horse as a symbol of freedom and societal constraint, reflecting the tension between individuality and conformity. Together, these works invite viewers to reflect on life’s complexities and the pursuit of equilibrium.
