Jean Jansem

French 1920-2013

Jean Jansem, a French-born painter, primarily drew inspiration from the human figure. He studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and was actively involved in seven independent workshops, most notably the Grande Chaumiére. It was at these workshops that he refined his craft and cultivated relationships with fellow artists. He practiced fabric design, cartoon illustration, and painting. Jansem's work is characterised by his distinctive use of line, which possesses a graphic and sensitive quality. His lines flow freely, transcending the flat canvas and imbuing his work with a sense of authenticity and sensitivity that mirrors his profound love for humanity. His awards include Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1953, the Comparison Prize in 1958, and the Knight of the French Legion of Honour in 2003.
