Jan Vermeiren

South African 1949-

Born in Belgium in 1949, Jan Vermeiren began his formal art training while still in school. He subsequently studied art full time at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp where he attained a degree in Graphic Art in 1974. Vermeiren moved to South Africa in the late 1970s. From 1981 to 1987, he was a lecturer at the Technical College for Advanced Education in Cape Town where he joined an artist group comprised of notable artists such as Alfred Krentz, Marthinus la Grange, Erik Laubscher, Claude Bouscharain, and Stanley Pinker. Vermeiren’s works are a marriage of the influences of his European roots and the African continent on which he has spent a large part of his life and career. The artist has participated in numerous group and solo shows since 1969 in South Africa, Namibia, the USA, and Europe.
