Jan Neethling

South African 1938-

Jan Neething was born in London, UK, in 1938, but moved with his family to South Africa in 1940. Between 1958 and 1960, he studied at the School of Art at Pretoria Technical College (now Tshwane University of Technology) under Robert Hodgins, who would become an important mentor, friend, and collaborator for fifty years (Hodgins died in 2010). While the influence of each artist on the other is evident in their oeuvres, Neethling remained little known outside of Johannesburg until more recently. Although he began exhibiting in the 1970s (often alongside Hodgins), his first solo show was only in 2008. Neethling’s works comprise colourful landscapes, still lives, figures, and nudes in a variety of media ranging from oils, watercolour, etching, charcoal, and more.
