Hazel Mphande

South African 1989- 

Hazel Mphande, born in 1989, is a self-taught photographer from Pretoria, with a particular interest in self-portraiture. Her passion for photography began with a DSLR camera, leading her to refine her skills through foundational and intermediate courses at The Market Photography Workshop in 2014. Mphande further developed her craft with an advanced course at Through the Lens Collective in 2021. Her work, characterised by long shutter speeds and double exposure, explores themes of body, identity, and nature. Mphande’s work has been exhibited at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in New York City (2024) and London (2023 and 2021), and she was selected for the 2023 New York Portfolio Review.
