Johannes Meiring, born in 1934 in Potchefstroom and educated in Cape Town and Munich, was a pivotal figure in the preservation of South Africa's architectural heritage. His advocacy and leadership played a crucial role in saving Pretoria's Church Square from demolition and overseeing the restoration of several iconic structures, including the Old Council Chambers and the historic Erasmus Castle in Pretoria East.

In 1984, Meiring co-founded the esteemed architectural firm Van der Lecq & Meiring, which left an indelible mark on South Africa's built environment. The firm's notable projects, such as the expansion of Cape Town's Parliament and the restoration of Johannesburg's City Hall, showcased Meiring's commitment to blending modern design with historical preservation.
