Artists

Born in Germany in 1927, Gunther Van der Reis moved with his parents to South Africa in 1937. Van der Reis studied at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Art and later achieved an MA in Art at the University of Pretoria. He taught at schools in Cape Town until 1956 when he moved to Pretoria to teach at the Pretoria Art Centre. Van der Reis then moved on to lecture at the Pretoria Education College and then to the art department at the Pretoria Technikon in 1963 where he would become the Senior Lecturer for painting and graphic art. In 1988 he transitioned into being a full-time artist.

Van der Reis is a mixed media artist who is interested in creating texture within the surfaces of his works. He is inspired by nature and the landscapes around him.
