Florian Wozniak

German/South African 1962-

Florian Wozniak is a contemporary South African sculptor. Born in Germany, Wozniak spent part of his youth in India before moving to South Africa. In 1986 Wozniak graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with a degree in Fine Art, majoring in sculpture, and between 1987 and 1988 he attended the Sommerakademie in Salzburg. Whilst in Europe he gained extensive experience by carving marble in Italy, working as a stone mason, and studying sculpture and teaching at the Bildhauerschule Mullheim in Switzerland. Wozniak returned to South Africa in the early 1990s.

Wozniak works primarily in bonze, creating powerful but serene and tender figurative sculptures. His gently undulating forms and smooth surfaces suggest a stillness and contemplation, sometimes including subtle humour or capturing a moment of tension or intimacy.

Wozniak has completed a number of commissions in Europe and South Africa including Friendship, a public sculpture commissioned for the Johannesburg Botanic Garden in 1999. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States of America as well as locally. His sculptures are represented in private and public collections both internationally and throughout South Africa.
