Dion Cupido

South African 1973- 

Dion Cupido is a largely self-taught artist hailing from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town where he started out graffitiing walls. His paintings, which explore memory and identity, are a blend of this street art along with abstraction and classical portraiture. He discovered his talent for art in 1990 and first exhibited in 1998. In 2013, ARTsouthAFRICA nominated him for the Bright Young Thing award, and he was shortlisted for the SANLAM Portrait Award in 2015. Cupido has participated in numerous group and solo shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg and continues to create and exhibit. He lives and works in Cape Town.
