George Diederick During was born in Roodepoort in 1917. After completing matric at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, he attended the University of the Witwatersrand where he obtained a BA LLB. During worked in his father’s legal firm for two years but in 1944, his passion for art saw him signing up at the Wits Technikon. He studied art under Maurice van Essche, who had moved to South Africa from the Belgian Congo. Van Essche had a profound effect on the art of Diederick During who painted African subjects in a Modernist manner using oil, pastel and tempera. During's work is represented in many private, public and corporate collections.
