David Southwood

South Africa 1971- 


South African photographer David Southwood was born in Pietermaritzburg and received his BA in History and Legal Studies from the University of Natal in 1995. In 1998, he opened his first solo show In Between at the João Ferriera Fine Art Gallery.

Southwood’s decade-long photographic project on the Milnerton flea market in Cape Town was turned into a book, Milnerton Market, and published by Fourthwall books in 2011. Other projects include Bill of Rights (2014), a photobook documenting South Africa’s Bill of Rights with foreword by former Constitutional Court Judge, Edwin Cameron; MEMORY CARD SEA POWER (2014), a newspaper about the lives of Tanzanian stowaways who live under the bridges by Cape Town’s harbour; and HUSTLES (2018), an architectural portrait of Johannesburg.

Southwood’s work is found in the collection of the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; the Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki; the Christoph Merian Stiftung, Basel, Switzerland; The collection of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Braamfontein; and Spier, Stellenbosch. He has featured in publications like The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, and Wallpaper as well as been a guest speaker at higher education institutions such as Yale University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Cape Town, and Stellenbosch University.
