South African 1949- 

Catherine Paynter is a South African painter born in Johannesburg in 1949. Her subjects range from still lifes to landscapes to underwater sea animals. Her inspiration is drawn from her extensive travels throughout Africa – Botswana, Egypt, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – and further afield to Asia, Europe, and the United States. Paynter’s colour palette is slightly excentric: bright and rich gouache on cotton canvas, which she accents with mica, gold, aerosol, and liquid acrylic varnishes.
