Bronwen (Jinny) Heath

British/South African 1944-

Bronwen Jane Heath (Jinny) is a highly regarded painter, printmaker, designer, and illustrator from KwaZulu-Natal. Jinny was born in Cambridge to accomplished English artists Jack and Jane Heath. The Heath family relocated to South Africa in 1946, initially settling in Port Elizabeth and later in Pietermaritzburg. Jinny Heath received extensive training in Fine Art, heavily influenced by British Modernism, at home and through a rigorous classical and academic program at the University of Natal where her parents taught.

After completing her studies, Heath embarked on a successful career as an art lecturer, teaching Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, and Painting from 1971 to 2004. Alongside her teaching responsibilities, she completed several design commissions, including book covers, exhibition posters, logos, and costume designs for the University Dramatic Society.

Jinny Heath exhibited regularly, both in solo and group shows, in South Africa and Europe. Notable exhibitions include the Cape Town Triennial in 1982; The Grand Prix International d'Arts Plastique in Nice, France in 1991; Jabulisa! The Art of KwaZulu-Natal in 2001, and the Heath Family Retrospective Exhibition held at the Tatham Art Gallery from 2009 to 2010. Her artworks have been acquired by numerous major public art collections in South Africa, such as the Iziko South African National Gallery and the Tatham Art Gallery, as well as the State Gallery of Art in Lodz, Poland.
