The Old Jar Pottery

South African 1953-1984

The Old Jar Pottery (TOJ) was founded in1953 in Benoni, Johannesburg. It was named after De Olde Kryk, a Dutch pottery located in Milsbeek where the founder Henk Jacobs did his apprenticeship.

Initially they manufactured bowls for the florist industry and then introduced the floral and geometric maiolica-style decoration for which it is renowned. The pieces were decorated in a relatively limited palette on a white background.

In 1961 the studio invited various prominent South African artists including Walter Battiss to participate in a 'clay spree' as a publiciy event.

The factory closed in1984 as a result of the importation of cheap mass-produced Taiwanese wares that looked very similar to TOJ wares.
