Nico Masemola

South African 1987-2015 

Born in 1987 in Aliwal North, Nico Masemola grew up watching Hylton Nel at work in his ceramic studio in Bethulie. Masemola would subsequently become the first in an ever growing line of potters that has since come to be dubbed the School of Nel. Learning from a master craftsman such as the likes of Hylton Nel, Masemola’s own work reflects a skillful control of glaze combined with a witty humour evident in his subjects. Ranging from biblical subjects such as Adam and Eve, Masemola incorporates both domestic and wild creatures from the animal kingdom such as horses, hares and greyhounds to lions and tigers, each exuding their own playful characters.
