Tyrone Errol Appollis

South African 1957-

Tyrone Appollis, a renowned South African artist and poet, played a pivotal role in establishing the Mitchell’s Plain Art Group in 1988. Active since the late 1970s, Appollis believes that ‘an artist must be of their time’. Born in Cape Town in 1957, Appollis studied art part-time at the Community Arts Project under Cecil Skotnes and at the Foundation School of Art in Observatory. Appollis' art is deeply rooted in his Cape Town heritage, historical "coloured" identity, post-apartheid South African nationality, non-racial African identity, and humanistic global outlook. His work is featured in numerous public and private collections, both in South Africa and internationally, solidifying his status as an influential artist.
