Johannes Antonie Smith

South African 1886-1954 

Born in Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape, Johannes Antonie Smith was educated at Victoria College (the predecessor to Stellenbosch University). He was a reporter and editor for numerous news publications in Aberdeen, Potchefstroom, Graaff-Reinet, and Pietermaritzburg before joining Die Burger first as a Johannesburg collaborator and then as an art critic for 20 years. Additionally, Smith authored three Afrikaans books: Boer en Brit, Van Bloed-rivier na Perdekaraal, and Ek Rebelleer. He was also a skilled artist and member of many arts organisations with whom he exhibited including the South African Society of Artists and the National Academy.
