Edouard Vuillard

French 1868-1940

Édouard Vuillard, born in 1868 in Cuiseaux, France, was a French painter, printmaker, and decorative artist associated with the Nabis Group. He studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was influenced by Paul Gauguin’s Synthetism and Japanese woodblock prints. Working in painting, lithography, and decorative panels, Vuillard became known for his intimate interior scenes that merge figures with richly patterned domestic spaces, often inspired by his mother’s dressmaking workshop. Vuillard’s paintings are held in major collections including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Tate in London, the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
