Barbara Wildenboer

South African 1973-

Barbara Wildenboer received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Pretoria (1996), Bachelor of Visual Arts from The University of South Africa (UNISA) (2003), and Master of Fine Arts from The University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art (2007). Her work is an exploration of environmental aesthetics and the mathematical sublime (a concept developed by philosopher Immanuel Kant). Her mediums are various, but she mainly uses photo- and paper collages, installations, and digital animations. She is known for her altered books – including the series Library of the Infinitesimally Small and Unimaginable Large (2011-present) - wherein she carefully cuts and constructs the pages of the book to create a new work; a new narrative.

She has been awarded artist residencies in Amman, Jordan (2006); Birzeit, Palestine (2009); Bogota, Colombia (2011); Penang, Malaysia (2013); Fontainebleau, France (2017); Barcelona, Spain (2018); and Marrakech, Morocco (2022).
