Nicholaas Maritz was born in Pretoria in 1959. He grew up in an artistic family, which led him to cultivate his own talents. He held his first solo show at the Eastern Province Society of Fine Arts in Port Elizabeth in 1976 and began his studies in fine art at the University of Cape Town in 1978. Maritz’s works are colourful and expressive and his subject matter ranges from still lifes to landscapes to portraits of cats. He is a multi-media artist but is well-known for his works in enamel on board. Maritz lives in Darling, on the West Coast, where he exhibits his art at the Maritz Museum, the artist’s previous home and studio. Additionally, his works can be found in collections such as the Iziko South African National Gallery, the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, the Pretoria Art Museum, and the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
