Marena (Kaffie) Pretorius

South African 1941-2020 

Marena (Kaffie) Pretorius was born in 1941 in Lambert’s Bay, a small fishing town on the West Coast. She attended Stellenbosch University, where she completed her degree as a teacher, and then studied for a year under Andre van Zyle at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. She worked at several art schools, including in Los Angeles, California, in 1976. Additionally, Pretorius spent a few months in 1989 painting in Amsterdam. Her paintings were primarily inspired by the landscapes of her youth - the land and sea - and she often incorporated birds and goats into her scenes.
