Julie Mehretu

Ethiopian/American 1970- 

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Julie Mehretu is a contemporary visual artist acclaimed for her large-scale, multilayered abstract paintings. Her academic training includes a BA from Kalamazoo College, Michigan, studies at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, and an MFA with honours from the Rhode Island School of Design. Mehretu's artworks explore themes of geopolitics, history, displacement, migration, and climate change through a distinctive calligraphic and painterly visual language that combines Abstract Expressionism with social commentary.

Mehretu’s paintings have been featured in major exhibitions at institutions including the Guggenheim Museums, the High Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Mehretu’s artworks are represented in the collections of prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Julie Mehretu is a living artist and continues to be an influential figure in the contemporary art world.
