South African 1928-1996 


Dick (Richard) Findlay was born in Pretoria in 1928. He studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and began his professional career as an architect before becoming a natural history painter. Primarily a watercolour painter, Findlay is known for his ornithological works, as well as his illustrations of flora and fauna. His works have appeared in ten books and over fifty journals, such as the First Folio of South African Birds (1959) and Folio of South African Animals (1967). In addition to his paintings, Findlay created over 70 stamp designs and several designs for coins. He was also involved in the South African theatre, where he designed various stage productions and was a published playwright.
