Harald Nielsen - Georg Jensen

Copenhagen, Denmark

Danish designer Harald Nielsen joined the Georg Jensen silversmithy as an apprentice chaser in 1909 and remained with the firm for the rest of his career, later becoming Georg Jensen's brother-in-law. Guided by the house's chief designer Johan Rohde, he led the firm's shift away from Georg Jensen's Art Nouveau tradition toward a cleaner, geometric Art Deco idiom, while maintaining the exceptional standards of craftsmanship associated with the Copenhagen house. Nielsen went on to serve as the firm's director from 1954 to 1958 and as its artistic leader until 1962. His designs for Georg Jensen remain among the most distinctive examples of twentieth century Scandinavian Art Deco silver.
