Frederik Lambertus Hermann

Cape Colony 


Frederik Lambertus Herman (or Hermann) was a Cape silversmith born in 1778 to Johan Zacharias Hermann and Aletta Maria Fick. He was baptised at the Cape on the 1 February 1778 and married Rachel Lourentia Rademan on 9 May 1802. Hermann’s workshop has been listed as being at 50 Long Street in 1800 and later at 38 Long Street between 1810 and 1811. Celebrated by David Heller in History of Cape Silver as “one of the finest of all Cape silversmiths,” he is known for exceptional craftsmanship and distinctive hallmark. An example of his work can be seen illustrated on page 101 of Stephan Welz’s Cape Silver.
