Dr Khanya Mthethwa

Johannesburg, South-Africa 

Dr Khanya Mthethwa is a multi-award-winning jewellery designer from KwaZulu-Natal and an academic at the University of Johannesburg. She holds a PhD in Art History, a Master of Arts in Design, and certificates in Rough Diamond Evaluation and Diamond Cutting. Khanya is also the founder and CEO of Changing Facets, a multidisciplinary company merging contemporary jewellery, indigenous African artistry, and design innovation. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Croatia, Italy, Athens, Munich, Greece, and Estonia. Her series Abantu: Threads That Bind Us explores the intimate connections between memory, identity, and indigenous African knowledge systems. Each piece, while distinct, collectively reflects the resilience and continuity of cultural practices passed down through generations. Drawing from personal and communal narratives, her work integrates traditional techniques, materials, and symbolism in contemporary forms, honouring ancestral wisdom while affirming the evolving presence of African design.
