Mappin Brothers

Sheffield

Mappin Brothers was a renowned 19th-century Sheffield silversmith firm founded by the grandsons of Jonathan Mappin, established as Mappin Brothers Ltd in 1845. Following a family split, it was acquired by the rival firm Mappin & Webb in 1902. They are known for high-quality Victorian silver plate, cutlery, and, notably, the "Campaign" watch. The company grew from a 1775 workshop. In the mid-19th century, four great-grandsons of Jonathan Mappin—Frederick, Edward, Joseph Charles, and John—formed Mappin Brothers Ltd. In 1859, the partnership was dissolved. John Mappin left to start his own firm, which eventually became Mappin & Webb in 1862. For several decades, "Mappin Brothers" and "Mappin & Webb" existed as separate competing entities. In 1902, Mappin & Webb acquired Mappin Brothers, and from 1904, the firm was known as Mappin & Webb Ltd, often noting "incorporating Mappin Brothers".
