Mariambibi Khan

Stellenbosch, South-Africa 

Mariambibi Khan is a contemporary jeweller and full-time lecturer in the Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division at Stellenbosch University, where she has taught since 2018. She earned her Master’s degree in Visual Arts (Jewellery Design) cum laude at Stellenbosch University. In 2024, her work was featured in The Nature of Imperfection, a publication celebrating the Jewelry and Adornment exhibition by the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston. Mariambibi’s research and creative practice explore contemporary jewellery as a vehicle for reinterpreting and affirming Islamic feminine identity, faith, and spirituality in South Africa. Drawing on her South African Indian heritage, she incorporates textiles, cotton, and metal alongside inherited techniques such as embroidery, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. Through transforming familiar materials such as paper, porcelain, and needlework into contemporary forms, her work reflects the interconnectedness of faith, identity, and memory, creating pieces that weave cultural history, personal experience, and evolving notions of self.
