Chris de Beer

Chris de Beer graduated with a Master’s in Fine Art (Jewellery) from Stellenbosch University in 1995 and lectured in Jewellery Design at Durban University of Technology (Technikon Natal) from 1988 to 2023. During this time, he participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. His contemporary practice reflects on observations from daily encounters, exploring new materials and techniques. He examines overlooked elements in the environment, such as plastics, drawing parallels to pioneer plants like weeds, and uses symbolism in his work, birds representing innocence and peace, while chameleons, or their absence, signal the state of the natural ecosystem. Through these explorations, his work engages with both material experimentation and conceptual reflection, creating jewellery that comments on the intersections of human culture, nature, and the subtle forces that shape our perception of the everyday.
